IMCore vs Tinode: choosing an open-source messaging platform

Tinode is a long-standing open-source messaging platform: a Go server (multiple databases) with the most complete official client suite — iOS, Android, web and command line, enough to run a chat app out of the box. IMCore is also Go but takes the commercial-delivery route: capabilities baked into the release (groups/community/live rooms/support), built-in AI, buyout licensing. Note that Tinode’s server is GPL-3.0 — worth reading the license terms before commercial integration.

Tinode is an open-source instant-messaging platform (Go server under GPL-3.0; Apache-2.0 clients) with official iOS / Android / Web / CLI clients and steady releases.

When to choose Tinode

When you want a pure chat product running fastest on the full official client suite, accept self-hosting under GPL, and need no built-in support or AI — Tinode’s out-of-the-box completeness is excellent.

When to choose IMCore

When the commercial delivery needs clean buyout licensing, chat must be embedded into your own product (UIKit), built-in support and AI matter, or you run on Xinchuang environments.

FAQ

What does Tinode’s GPL-3.0 server mean for commercial use?

Simplified (not legal advice): internal self-use is generally unaffected; but distributing a modified server triggers GPL obligations to open those modifications. If you will ship it inside a commercial product to customers, read the license or consult counsel first. IMCore commercial editions are buyout-licensed with no such obligation in the delivery model.

How do Tinode’s full clients differ from IMCore’s UIKit?

Different philosophies: Tinode ships finished apps — rebrand and go; IMCore ships a UIKit — you build chat into your own product with full control over UX and branding. It depends on whether you want a standalone chat app fast, or chat embedded in an existing product.

How do we scope a migration from Tinode?

The usual path: run both in parallel, switch clients to IMCore’s UIKit/SDK, import history per retention needs. Bring your scale and scenario and we will scope it.
