IMCore vs WuKongIM: choosing a Go IM stack

WuKongIM is an Apache-2.0 open-source Go communication engine; paired with its sibling open-source app TangSengDaoDao it forms a layered ecosystem — the engine owns connections and delivery while business layers are built (or adopted) on top. IMCore is also Go, but ships groups, community, live rooms and AI + human support inside one release. The choice isn’t the language — it’s layered assembly versus all-in-one delivery.

WuKongIM is an Apache-2.0 distributed communication engine in Go with super-large-group read-diffusion support; its official ecosystem app TangSengDaoDao (server/app/web, all open source) provides the full IM product layer. v2 keeps updating while v3 is in beta.

When to choose WuKongIM

When your team wants full control of the layered architecture (building your own business layer or heavily customizing TangSeng), needs read-diffusion for super-large groups, and can ride its release cadence through the v3 transition.

When to choose IMCore

When you want production shape out of the box (groups/community/live rooms/support together), built-in AI support, stable releases with commercial backing, and low-ops single-binary deployment.

FAQ

WuKongIM and TangSeng are both Apache-2.0 and free — why consider IMCore?

Open-source usable is not production-ready: the support system, AI assistant, moderation callbacks, UIKit delivery, stable releases with upgrade guarantees and commercial backing ship with IMCore. Its Basic edition is also free — run both on your own server and decide.

Both are written in Go — what is the real difference?

Architecture: WuKongIM layers business on top of an engine — maximum freedom, assembly cost on you; IMCore bakes the capabilities into the release, so one binary is a complete product. The former suits engine-minded teams, the latter teams focused on shipping.

How do we scope a migration from WuKongIM?

The usual path: run both in parallel, switch clients to IMCore’s UIKit/SDK, import history per retention needs. Bring your scale and scenario and we will scope it together.
